It was an election that was snatched from the Iranian people – or at least that’s the impression being given by Western media outlets. But are they telling the full story?

The European Union has rejected Iran’s accusations that the Western media helped engineer post-election unrest as protests in Tehran continue.

And US President Barack Obama has also said that Washington is not interfering in Iran’s affairs. While strongly condemning the actions of Tehran in curbing the protests, Obama said the United States respects the sovereignty of the country.

Iran tells Russia of plan to solve world problems

Iran’s top national security official on Monday held talks with his Russian counterpart about a new Iranian package aimed at solving world problems, including the nuclear standoff with the West.

“The package is about the great questions of the world and the nuclear question could be the subject of discussion,” Iran’s top national security official Saeed Jalili said after talks with Russia’s Valentin Sobolev.

Jalili gave no further details over the contents of the package, which appears to be an all-embracing attempt to solve the problems of the world rather than a specific offer to end the nuclear crisis.

Iran to ready thousands of graves for enemy soldiers

Iran is to dig 320,000 graves in border districts to allow for the burial of enemy soldiers in the event of any attack on its territory, a top commander said on Sunday.

“In implementation of the Geneva Conventions… the necessary measures are being taken to provide for the burial of enemy soldiers,” the Mehr news agency quoted General Mir-Faisal Bagherzadeh as saying.

“We have plans to dig 15,000 to 20,000 graves in each of the border provinces or a total of 320,000,” the general said, some of them mass graves if necessary.

Heightened tensions between Iran and the West after the Islamic republic’s disputed presidential poll allow Tehran to deflect demands to re-start talks on its nuclear programme, analysts said Monday.

But experts agree that Iran has no intention of sliding into international isolation like North Korea over its nuclear ambitions.

Iranian authorities arrested nine local staff at the British embassy in recent days, the latest move in Tehran’s effort to portray Britain as the chief foreign instigator of the violence which flared after the June 12 vote.

De Raad van Hoeders van de Grondwet heeft de resultaten bevestigd van de presidentsverkiezingen op 12 juni in Iran, en bijgevolg de herverkiezing van Mahmud Ahmadinejad. Dat gebeurde na een gedeeltelijke hertelling van de stemmen. Dat meldt de Iraanse staatstelevisie.

De leider van de Raad, ayatollah Ahmad Janati, bracht minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Sadeq Mahoel per brief op de hoogte van het resultaat van de hertellingsoperatie. Die werd geboycot door de tegenkandidaten, preciseerde de staatstelevisie.

Volgens persagentschap Fars is de controle die maandagochtend begon, afgerond in de steden Karaj (noorden), Kerman (zuiden), Nahbandan (oosten), Sarbisheh (oosten) en Babolsar (noorden).

Statements on Israel’s 60th Birthday

Those who think they can revive the stinking corpse of the usurping and fake Israeli regime by throwing a birthday party are seriously mistaken. Today the reason for the Zionist regime’s existence is questioned, and this regime is on its way to annihilation.”

Ahmadinejad also stated that Israel “has reached the end like a dead rat after being slapped by the Lebanese”, which is presumably a reference to the July-August 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

In a subsequent speech, Ahmadinejad stated “The Zionist regime is dying,” and that “The criminals imagine that by holding celebrations (…) they can save the Zionist regime from death.” Ahmadinejad also stated that “They should know that regional nations hate this fake and criminal regime and if the smallest and briefest chance is given to regional nations they will destroy (it)”.

Unfortunately, some of the new Administration’s tactics are those of the old. Most likely, it became apparent to US strategists that attacking Iran militarily was impossible for the foreseeable future. It would be an extremely costly operation both in terms of finances and personnel, both of which are in short supply.

Before leaving office, the Bush administration is said to have funneled hundreds of millions of dollars into a plan to infiltrate and destabilize Iran. On May 23, 2007, Brian Ross and Richard Esposito reported on ABC News: “The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell…ABC News.” On May 27, 2007, the London Telegraph independently reported: “Mr. Bush has signed an official document endorsing CIA plans for propaganda and disinformation campaign intended to destabilize, and eventually topple, the theocratic rule of the mullahs.” It was to be called it the “Bush Black Ops Plan.”

High voter turnout is blow to the West, says Ahmadinejad

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has defended his disputed re-election, claiming the massive turnout in Friday’s poll was a blow to “the oppressive system ruling the world,” in a reference to the United States and its allies.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday defended his hotly disputed re-election as security forces cracked down on opposition protestors in Tehran, where fresh violence erupted.

Police said they have rounded up a total of 170 people over the massive post-election protests and street riots which erupted in the Iranian capital after Ahmadinejad’s defeated challengers complained of fraud and vote-rigging.

Analysts have warned that the dramatic events could pose a risk to the future of the Shiite-dominated country, which has been under the control of powerful clerics since the Islamic revoluion three decades ago.

Ahmadinejad ’set for Iran victory’

Ahmadinejad wins Iran presidential vote

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been re-elected as president of Iran with a resounding victory, the country’s electoral commission says.

With more than 80% of results in, the commission said he won 64% support in an election marked by high turnout.

His main rival, reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi, also claimed victory, calling the result a “dangerous charade”.

Police have sealed off Mr Mousavi’s campaign HQ, preventing his supporters from holding a news conference.

Mr Mousavi was hoping to prevent Mr Ahmadinejad winning more than 50% of the vote, in order to force as run-off election.

However, the Iranian election commission said Mr Mousavi’s share of the vote was around 32%.

Een tweede ronde lijkt niet meer nodig nu Ahmadinjead circa 64 procent van de stemmen heeft gekregen. Wanneer iemand in de eerste ronde 50 procent of meer van de stemmen krijgt, vervalt een tweede ronde.

De tegenstanders van de conservatieve president zijn verbijsterd over de monsterzege. De belangrijkste en hervormingsgezinde rivaal van Ahmadinejad, Mir Hossein Mousavi, stond zaterdagmorgen op 32,57 procent van stemmen met nog slechts 6 procent van de stemmen ongeteld, meldde de Iraanse nieuwszender Presstv. De overige twee kandidaten, Mohsen Rezai en Mehdi Karoubi, komen naar het zich laat aanzien niet verder dan respectievelijk 1,66 en 0,83 procent.

De opkomst was volgens de verkiezingscommissie ongekend groot. Ruim 32 miljoen van de 46 miljoen stemgerechtigde Iraniërs hebben hun stem uitgebracht. Een aantal waarnemers meende voor de verkiezingen dat een hoge opkomst de oppositie tegen Ahmadinejad zou versterken. Maar de uitslagen geven de president toch een enorme overwinning.

Vooral de omvang daarvan is volgens Ahmadinejads tegenstanders veel te groot om waar te zijn. Zij stellen dat er op grote schaal verkiezingsfraude moet zijn gepleegd.

De politie raakte zaterdag slaags met aanhangers van Mir Hossein Mousavi. De menigte demonstreerde voor het kantoor van Mousavi. De politie sloeg enkele betogers met knuppels.

The Iranian political system balances Islamic theocracy with elements of modern democracy

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iranians approved in a referendum a new constitution for a hybrid political system which combines elements of democracy with unelected religious leadership.

The Iranian political system is therefore a mix of appointed and directly elected institutions.

In recent years, Iran’s conservative body of appointed institutions have faced a challenge from reformist politicians directly elected by the people, yet the supreme leader remains the overarching authority over the country.

Supreme leader

The supreme leader is the highest ranking political and religious authority in the country.

He appoints the chiefs of posts such as the commanders of the armed forces, chief judges, prosecutors as well as six of the Islamic jurists who sit on the 12-member Guardian Council.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has held the position of supreme leader since 1989, when he was selected by the Assembly of Experts.
